Word of the week: EGREGIOUS - Слово тижня: СТРАШЕННИЙ, КРИЧУЩИЙ

Шукала український відповідник російського “вопиющий” і натрапила на цей скарб. Навіть просто гортаючи сторінки словників і нишпорячи на сайтах тезаурусів у пошуках одного слова, можна нічогенько так поглибити словниковий запас. Видавництва вдаються до різноманітних слів, щоб дати визначення egregious:

“outstandingly bad, shocking” (Oxford Dictionaries);

“(of something bad) extreme; beyond any reasonable degree” (Cambridge Dictionaries Online);

“conspicuously bad or offensive” (American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language);

“flagrant” (Collins Dictionaries)

Examples (часто трапляється у сполученні egregious abuse):

an egregious abuse of authority

an egregious example of misrepresentation

egregious abuses of copyright

А раніше це слово було майже антонімом до нинішнього. Воно застосовувалось до того, що виділялося своїми позитивними якостями на фоні подібного іншого. Саме слово походить від латинського слова, яке означало буквально "standing out of the flock", тобто не просто "good", а "remarkably good"!

Idioms - a brush with the law - проблеми з законом

Idioms - (to have) a (close) brush with the law - мати проблеми із законом

To have a brush with something, such as the law, means to have a short experience of a dangerous, undesirable or unpleasant situation.

Ідіому "a brush with", як правило, вживають, коли виникає небезпечна, небажана чи геть неприємна ситуація, якої спромоглися уникнути чи наслідки якої були не настільки погані, як могли б бути. Тому варіантів перекладу може бути дуже багато, залежно від конкретного контексту. 

Стосовно "a brush with the law" найчастіше бачу і чую варіант "мати проблеми із законом", але є також "конфлікт, неприємності із законом", "неприємний досвід із законом" і більш розмовне "мати неприємнощі із законом".

Examples:

He had a brush with the law for speeding two years ago; however, he has had a clean record ever since.

Was that his first brush with the law? - No, as far as I know, that man had a few brushes with the law when he was a teenager, but nothing that serious.

Other uses of “brush” in this meaning:

My brother had a brush with death on the motorway. ("ледь не загинув", "уникнув смерті")

Ann had a brush with the police during the protest. ("сутичка, проблеми з поліцією")

The receptionist and the owners were really friendly and helpful. However, we had a bad brush with one of the staff. ("неприємна ситуація з одним із працівників")

Last week we went to an exhibition named "A Brush With The War", where military art from Korea to Afghanistan was shown. ("досвід війни", "контакт із війною")

Word of the week: LODESTAR - ПРОВІДНА ЗОРЯ

Мені здається, що серед останніх слів із виписаного словничка це найбільш надихає і найкраще підходить для першого слова тижня.

LODESTAR [COUNTABLE] MAINLY LITERARY a principle that always influences or directs your actions (rule, convention, law), something that serves as a guide or on which the attention is fixed, “guiding light”.

Examples:

The party manifesto is no longer the lodestar it used to be. (Cambridge Online Dictionary).

The idea of public service has been a lodestar for her throughout her life. (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)

In legal texts this term is coined to the amount obtained by multiplying the reasonable amount of hours spent by an attorney working on a case by the reasonable hourly billing rate for purposes of calculating an award of attorney's fees.

Example: 

Under the lodestar method, the most heavily weighted multipliers are the time and labor required.

The First Post - Перший пост

Hello, world.

My name is Ollie (shortened for Olha). It's been a long time since I became interested in words and languages. It is only now that my intention to write into a bilingual (Ukrainian-English) blog on some language issues that I need to clarify is strong enough to move on with that.

The blog is also intended for keeping track of some posts that I write as a freelancer concerning 7 languages: Ukrainian (my native), Russian (equal to native), English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese. It might seem quite extraordinary, but I cannot boast with either being a fluent polyglot or a degree in philology. I still need an awful deal of work, practice and attitude to deepen my knowledge of these languages, not to mention mastering them. Anyway, I have decided to share some bits of my findings to see if anyone might be interested in them.

Тhe notes on the words and phrases that come across my way in texts or conversation and my conclusions regarding them in particular should not be taken too seriously. Any mistakes that you encounter (especially, as a native speaker of the language in question) are welcome to be corrected.

I am on maternity leave, bringing up a wonderful son. Recently I have touched on the topic of early development and language study in early age for bilinguals and polyglots more than once, so there is a high possibility of writing on this issue as well in future.

Мене звати Оля. Я давно зацікавилася словами та мовами. Утім тільки зараз інтерес переріс у достатньо сильний намір, щоб таки почати писати у білінгвальний (українсько-англійський) блог про деякі мовознавчі моменти, які б мені хотілося прояснити.

Цей блог також призначений для збереження деяких фрілансових постів стосовно 7 мов: української (рідної для мене), російської (на рівні рідної мови), англійської, французької, італійської, іспанської та японської. Це може видаватися незвичайним, але я не можу пишатися ані майстерністю поліглота, ані бодай якимось дипломом філолога. Мені ще потрібно неабияк працювати, практикуватися і наполегливо вчитися, щоб хоча б поглибити знання цих мов, не кажучи вже про вільне володіння ними. Отож я вирішила ділитися деякими знахідками, щоб побачити, чи є до них інтерес.

Не слід сприймати надто серйозно нотатки про слова і фрази, які трапляються мені у текстах і розмовах, а особливо - мої власні висновки про них. Я вітаю виправлення помилок (особливо, якщо від носія мови, якою зроблена помилка) у блозі.

Наразі я в декреті, виховую чудового сина. Цими днями я часто торкаюся теми раннього розвитку і вивчення мов у ранньому віці білінгвами і поліглотами, тож існує чимала можливість появи відповідних постів у майбутньому.
